Maxillary Sinus Lifting for Implant
Placement in the Posterior Maxilla
When, How and Why To Lift

Implant Placement in the posterior maxilla in a mandatory and necessity for any patient
missing posterior teeth, not only for proper function but also for the protection of the
occlusal balance and the mutual protection between the anterior and posterior dentition.
Implant placement in the posterior maxilla replacing missing posterior teeth is the
standard of care nowadays. In many circumstances anatomical limitations can be an
obstacle for placing posterior Implants due to the maxillary sinus pneumatization
especially after extraction.
Maxillary sinus lifting procedure became a necessary procedure to allow the clinician to
place implants in the posterior region.
Many maxillary sinus lifting techniques has been documented in the literature according
to the anatomical feature of every case.
This procedure is also known with its challenging complications.
This presentation will allow the clinician to explore and discover the different sinus lifting
techniques and the rationale behind each one.

The Objectives:

  1. To know the maxillary sinus anatomy in details and how to use the different anatomical variations for the benefit of sinus lifting procedure.
  2. To plan the case properly according to the anatomical limitations.
  3. To acknowledge the biology behind the bone formation inside the maxillary sinus and its relation to the anatomical features.
  4. To know the different surgical techniques fo r maxillary sinus lifting with and without simultaneous Implant placement.
  5. To recognize the role of bone grafting inside the maxillary sinus and its proper application.
  6. To choose the proper bone type during the procedure.
  7. To pre-anticipate the amount of bone needed vs no bone at all for proper Implant placement either simultaneously or in a delayed approach.
  8. To achieve primary s tability of the Implant in the proper position without compromising the prosthetic outcome.
  9. To recognize the possible complications during the procedure and how to deal with them.
  10. To manage the late complications from all aspects.
